On January 24, 2013, the Community Support Foundation of Harney County (CSFHC) approved a revised application from the Harney County Writer-in-Residence Program (HCWIR), which has been operating under CSFHC for the last three and a half years.
The application revised the name and the structure of the group’s work with students and adults and officially melded Harney Basin Writers, the new 4-H Writers Club, a soon-to-be-born newsletter, writing workshops, the Write-Now Summer Program, performances, and fund-raisers, into one entity: the Writers Guild of Harney County. Publicity for the March 1 Bird-Song Fest and for Micki Selvitella's March 23 and 24 workshops will now show the new Writers Guild name.
Writers-in-Residence are now offered to the Harney County schools by ArtsEast of La Grande, in partnership with Fishtrap, Inc. Fishtrap initiated the residencies in Harney County seven years ago as part of a three-year pilot program in three eastern Oregon communities. With the new partnership offering the residencies, The Harney County Writer-in-Residence Program will be replaced by the 4-H Writers Club, which will work with youth interested in exploring creative writing. The club is still in the planning stage, and is expected to be “open for business” by the first week in February.
