Snow Cream Recipe

The original recipe that we made when I was a kid involved:

  • Snow (of course)
  • Milk, heavy cream or *cringe* sweetened condensed milk
  • Lots of sugar

Here is a dairy-free/dairy-optional version that the kids can enjoy (and really, how hard could it be to figure out… it only has four ingredients!)

Not only are these delicious, but because of the REAL food that's used in them, you won't find yourself wolfing down the entire batch because the fiber and other REAL nutrients will satiate your appetite.

Black Bean Brownies

1 can black beans
1 box of your favorite brownie mix

Open the can of black beans, rinse really well. Put the beans back in the can, add enough water to cover beans.
Put in blender or food processor and puree. Add puree to brownie mix, and then bake according to package directions.

Elderberry Syrup - Flu Remedy

Black elderberries(sambucus nigra) have been shown to prevent flu and speed recovery in those who have the flu.

Elderberries contain high levels of A, B, and C and stimulate the immune system. Several natural elderberry syrups are available at health stores or online, but usually for around $15 or more for 4-8 ounces. This recipe makes 16 ounces for a cost of under ten dollars and kids love the taste!

Preppers' Recipes

LYE  SOAP

  1 can lye

2 ½ pints cold water

6 lbs. clean fat

1 cup powdered borax

Slowly add lye to cold water and stir until dissolved in a large vessel (never use glass, stoneware or aluminum), and protest your hands with rubber gloves, and arms with long sleeves.  Warm fat (tallow, lard, or a combination of fats that have been cleaned) to approximately 85 degrees and stir into lye solution slowly, stirring constantly.  Continue slow stirring 10 to 20 minutes until it is the texture of thick honey.  Pour into mold.  Cut into bars before it gets hard.  Makes nine pounds.

To clean fat for soap:  Measure six pounds fat (approximately a three-pound coffee can full).  Bring to a boil in an equal amount of water.  Remove from heat and stir in one quart cold water.  Let stand till firm (overnight) and remove fat from top.  Discard water and residue.

Mosquito Abatement

Before there was fancy sprays and mosquito dunks to prevent mosquito eggs from hatching, there was vegetable oil.

A table spoon of vegetable oil added to a stock tank will spread across the surface and effectively smother mosquito eggs so they will not hatch.

If you cannot keep rain out of the bird bath, garden pails, etc., add a little oil.  Not enough to hamper birds, but just a skim across the water.  Other solutions include adding fish to larger ponds of water.  Prune hedes and now the yeard to reduce shade.

IDEA FACTORY: Double Deer Fences Protect Yard & Garden

The Best Deer Fences Aren't Always Expensive or Complicated             Simple and Inexpensive is Usually Best

Larry R. Miller

We've lived on the edge of wilderness areas where deer are part of life, as are elk, cougars, bears and other wild animals. Cougars, bears, elk and raccoons either crawl under, leap over or bull-elk their way through, but deer can be kept out of yards with a simple double fence.

Planting a Flower Garden Deer Won’t Munch

By Diane Rapaport

You can have a huge bouquet of flowers in your garden that deer won’t munch.

Their noses lead them to the sweetest smells.  Unfortunately, they adore roses and tulips as much as gardeners love to grow them.
